Planting medium: Seed raising mix (preferably organic).
Optimum germination temperature: 20-25°C
- Prepare small pots with a part sand, part soil base or a cactus soil mix. Sow seeds 3mm deep and lightly moisten. Leave pot/s in a warm, sunny location.
- Under 15°C, cacti can become dormant. Keep indoors during winter near sunny window. Lightly water when soil is completely dry. Seeds should germinate after 3-5 weeks.
- Once sprouted, move tray to sunny position. Transplant seedlings a week after sprouting. A small-medium pot until after first winter.
- Transplant to final position after last frost. Once established, will survive severe cold and not require much watering. Additional water advised when fruiting. Fire Barrel Cactus can take between 3-5 years to fully mature.
